Computer Concepts and Applications is an introduction to how computers work, how people use them, and how technology affects everyday life and work. It covers the basic parts of a computer system, operating systems, files, networks, the Internet, online communication, and common security concerns. The course also introduces broader ideas such as the social and ethical effects of technology and how computers are used in different workplaces.
Computer Concepts and Applications is a self-paced online course built from video lessons, quizzes, an assignment, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam, so steady work across the whole term matters as much as the final exam. When you complete the course, the credit appears on your transcript, and TESU recognizes that transcript credit as CIS-1070 – Computer Concepts and Applications.
The course covers hardware components, operating systems, files, networks, the Internet, online communication, and basic security, which are skills you use in nearly any job or household. It also addresses how computers are used in different workplaces and how technology affects society, which helps when you are reading a workplace system or weighing a technology decision. Because the credit lands as CIS-1070 at TESU, it can count toward an Associate of Arts or a Bachelor of Arts rather than sitting as an unrelated elective.
After you finish the course through UPI Study, your transcript is sent to Thomas Edison State University, where the registrar reviews it and applies the course as CIS-1070 – Computer Concepts and Applications. This named equivalency means the credit maps to a specific catalog course, which is the strongest form of transfer recognition and lets you place it directly in your degree plan. Transfer credit at TESU is capped at 90 credits, so plan the rest of your credits with that ceiling in mind.
This course suits working adults, people finishing a degree, career changers who need a computing foundation, and students who want to spend less on tuition, since TESU charges $449 per credit for New Jersey residents. Because TESU recognizes the course by name as CIS-1070, it carries more weight than a general elective, though the total you can transfer is capped at 90 credits (75%) of your degree. It is not a good fit if you already have strong, documented computing experience and want a credit that tests advanced programming, since the course focuses on concepts and applications rather than coding depth. It also does not replace the two required TESU courses that remain even after transfer credit is applied.
Thomas Edison State University has one of the most flexible transfer policies in the country and accepts ACE & NCCRS credit recommendations. With a four-year institution's credits, you can fulfill all degree requirements except two required TESU courses.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Final credit awards are determined solely by the receiving university's registrar.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Thomas Edison State University.
