Business Essentials is an introductory course that explains how businesses work and why they make the decisions they do. It covers core ideas such as supply and demand, business ownership, leadership, operations, ethics, and how companies respond to customers, workers, competitors, and government policy.
Business Essentials is a self-paced online course built from video lessons, quizzes, an assignment, and a final exam. Grading is split evenly across four parts: 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. The completed course produces a transcript entry, and that record is what UMT evaluates when it recognizes the course as MGT 100 – Introduction to Business.
The course explains supply and demand, opportunity cost, pricing, and how companies respond to customers, workers, competitors, and government policy. Those ideas apply to everyday decisions in sales, operations, purchasing, and management roles. At UMT, the credit lands as MGT 100 – Introduction to Business, a course within the Associate of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Business Administration.
After you finish, your transcript is sent to UMT. UMT's registrar then applies MGT 100 – Introduction to Business to your record, following review of transfer credit by UMT's Office of Academic Affairs with faculty or subject-matter experts. Because this is a named course equivalency, the credit maps to a specific catalog course code and fills that requirement in your degree plan rather than counting only as general credit. Transfer credit may not exceed 90 credits (75%) of your total, so plan your remaining UMT coursework with that limit in mind.
This course suits adults returning to finish a degree, people moving into business work from another field, and students who want to reduce what they pay for a UMT program. Because UMT recognizes it as MGT 100 – Introduction to Business, it can fill that requirement without enrolling in a paid UMT section, and transfer credit is capped at 90 credits (75%) of a degree. It is not a good fit if you need credit for a non-business subject, or if you expect UMT to accept it as a course other than MGT 100, since that decision rests with UMT's Office of Academic Affairs.
UMT's Office of Academic Affairs evaluates transfer credit and prior learning against UMT course outcomes, with review by faculty or subject-matter experts. The figures below are from UMT's 2026-27 University Catalog.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Final credit awards are determined by UMT's Office of Academic Affairs.
