Introduction to Networking is a course about how computers and other devices connect, communicate, and share data. It covers the basic ideas behind networks such as LANs, WANs, WLANs, and VPNs, along with the standards and protocols that let information move reliably across them. You also learn how the Internet works at a basic level, including IP addressing, DNS, routing, and the OSI and TCP/IP models.
Introduction to Networking is a self-paced online course that combines video lessons with quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Your grade is built from four equal parts: 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. Once you complete the course, the credit appears on your transcript, and UMT recognizes that credit as CST 210 – Data Communications.
The course covers LANs, WANs, WLANs, and VPNs, along with IP addressing, DNS, routing, and the OSI and TCP/IP models. These are the ideas behind how an office network or a company's internet connection is set up and kept running, so they are useful for anyone who works with business technology. At UMT, the credit lands as CST 210 – Data Communications, which can be applied toward programs such as the Associate of Business Administration or the Bachelor of Business Administration. Confirm with your advisor how the course fits your specific degree plan.
After you finish Introduction to Networking, request that your transcript be sent to UMT. UMT's Office of Academic Affairs evaluates transfer credit against UMT course outcomes, with review by faculty or subject-matter experts, and the registrar then applies the credit as CST 210 – Data Communications. Because this is a named course equivalency, you can see the exact course on your UMT record and plan around it in your degree audit. UMT accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so this course uses part of that allowance and should be counted in your overall plan.
This course suits students who want to finish a UMT degree at lower cost by replacing a data communications requirement with a transfer credit, including working adults fitting study around a job and those who are closing out a degree. Because UMT recognizes the course as a named equivalency to CST 210 – Data Communications, you can expect it to be recorded under that exact course code rather than as general elective credit. Transfer credit at UMT is capped at 90 credits, or 75% of the degree, so this course counts within that ceiling and should not be expected to cover unrelated gaps. It is not the right choice if you need a different course credited, or if you expect a networking credit to substitute for a hands-on technical certification.
UMT's Office of Academic Affairs evaluates transfer credit and prior learning against UMT course outcomes, with review by faculty or subject-matter experts. The figures below are from UMT's 2026-27 University Catalog.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Final credit awards are determined by UMT's Office of Academic Affairs.
