Principles of Finance is the study of how money is used, valued, and managed in business decisions. It covers how companies raise and spend capital, how to read financial statements, and how to judge whether an investment or project is worth pursuing. The course also introduces the basic tools used to compare future and present value, risk, and return.
Principles of Finance is a self-paced online course built on video lessons, quizzes, an assignment component, and a final exam. Grades are weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignments, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the most weight, but the earlier work still counts toward your grade. Once you complete the course and the credit appears on your transcript, UMT can evaluate that record for FIN 300 – Principles of Finance.
The course teaches time value of money, NPV and IRR, and how to read financial statements. These same tools apply to budgeting, comparing loan offers, and judging whether an investment is worth the risk. For students heading toward the Associate of Business Administration or the Bachelor of Business Administration at UMT, this course gives them a finance foundation they can build on in later business coursework.
After you finish the course, have your transcript sent to UMT. UMT's Office of Academic Affairs evaluates transfer credit against UMT course outcomes, with review by faculty or subject-matter experts. The course is recognized as FIN 300 – Principles of Finance, a named equivalency tied to a specific catalog code, so the credit fills a defined course slot in your degree plan. Transfer credit is capped at 90 credits (75%), so plan your remaining hours with that limit in mind.
This course suits working adults who want to study around a job, students close to finishing a degree who need a business-area course, and career changers who need a finance foundation before advancing. Because FIN 300 – Principles of Finance is a named course equivalency, the credit matches a specific UMT course rather than a general elective, though no more than 90 credits (75%) can transfer overall. It is not a good fit for students who need live, instructor-led instruction or who have no interest in finance fundamentals.
UMT's Office of Academic Affairs evaluates transfer credit and prior learning against UMT course outcomes, with review by faculty or subject-matter experts. The figures below are from UMT's 2026-27 University Catalog.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Final credit awards are determined by UMT's Office of Academic Affairs.
