Current Trends in Computer Science and IT is a broad introduction to how modern information technology is used in organizations. It covers both the technical side, such as databases, SQL, application design, and data analytics, and the managerial side, such as IT leadership, decision support systems, and how technology supports business strategy. The course also introduces newer areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, big data, and blockchain, with attention to their practical uses and limitations.
The course is self-paced and fully online. You work through video lessons on your own schedule, complete quizzes and assignments, and take a final exam, with your grade built from attendance, quizzes, assignments, and the final exam at 25% each. Once you complete it and the credit appears on your transcript, Woodmont's equivalency sheet assigns those 3 credits to General Elective.
The course covers databases and SQL, application design, data analytics, and IT leadership, so you come away knowing how organizations actually use information systems. At Woodmont, the 3 credits fill general elective space in the BS in Technology, BS in Business, or BS in Psychology, which means the knowledge adds breadth without taking the place of a core requirement. A business student who understands decision support systems, or a psychology student who has a working sense of data analytics, can communicate more effectively with the technical staff they work alongside.
After you finish, your transcript is sent to Woodmont College. The Woodmont registrar then applies the credit under the equivalency sheet as General Elective, so it counts toward total credit hours and your elective requirements. Woodmont accepts up to 84 credits (70%) in transfer, and this course uses part of that allowance, so check your remaining transfer capacity before you enroll. Speak with a Woodmont advisor to confirm how the elective fits your specific degree plan.
This course suits adults who already have some college credit and want to finish a Woodmont degree without paying for extra electives they do not need, since the 3 credits count toward elective hours at $360 per credit. Career changers who want a working overview of databases, analytics, and emerging technologies, without committing to a full computing sequence, will also find it useful. It is not a good match for anyone who needs a course to satisfy a specific technical requirement in their major, because Woodmont recognizes it only as a General Elective, and transfer credit is capped at 84 credits (70%) in total.
Woodmont College recognizes UPI Study courses for credit in its undergraduate degrees under the signed articulation agreement. Each course below has the Woodmont course, general education requirement or general elective Woodmont's equivalency sheets assign it.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Students must be enrolled at Woodmont in good standing and meet course and program requirements. Woodmont is solely responsible for how it recognizes UPI Study courses.
