Everything you need to know about UPI Study credits and how they transfer to Charter Oak State College.
Does Charter Oak State College officially accept UPI Study credits?
Yes. Charter Oak State College’s Registrar team formally reviewed UPI Study’s courses between August 7 and September 20, 2025. The review team — Dr. Jennifer Washington (Registrar), Paul Morganti, and Lindsay O’Grady (Associate Registrars) — evaluated credentials, syllabi, student identity protocols, assessment methodology, and transcripts. Charter Oak classifies UPI Study as a non-collegiate course provider whose ACE-recommended courses are eligible for credit transfer. 6 courses were formally verified. All other ACE & NCCRS courses are evaluated on a per-student, per-degree basis by the Registrar.
Which 6 courses are COSC-Verified and what score is required?
The Charter Oak Registrar team verified these 6 UPI Study courses, each requiring a minimum score of 80% as posted to the UPI Transcript System:
✅ Biology 100 — Intro to Biology I (3 cr, Lower division)
✅ Biology 200 — Intro to Biology II (3 cr, Lower division)
✅ Chemistry 111 — Chemistry I (3 cr, Lower division)
✅ Physics 200 — Physics I (3 cr, Lower division)
✅ Math 230 — Discrete Mathematics (3 cr, Lower division)
✅ Math 265 — Calculus 2 (3 cr, Lower division)
These map to Charter Oak’s Scientific Reasoning (SRE), Scientific Knowledge (SKU), and Quantitative Reasoning (QTR) GE categories.
What is the difference between COSC-Verified and UPI Research equivalencies?
✅ COSC-Verified: These 6 courses were formally confirmed by the Charter Oak Registrar team. They carry the 80% minimum score requirement and are the only UPI Study courses where Charter Oak has explicitly published approval.
📋 UPI Research: All other 63 course mappings were researched by the UPI Study team using Charter Oak’s published General Education framework, GE category outcomes, and course descriptions from the official COSC catalog. These represent our best-faith mapping, but final credit determination is always made by the COSC Registrar on a per-student, per-degree basis. We recommend confirming specific mappings with the Charter Oak Registrar before enrolling.
What are Charter Oak’s General Education categories and how do UPI courses cover them?
Charter Oak’s GE framework (for most BS degrees) requires 40–41 credits across 13 categories. Here’s how UPI Study covers each:

Is Charter Oak State College accredited and who is it for?
Yes. Charter Oak is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) — the same accreditor as Harvard and MIT. Founded in 1973 by the Connecticut legislature, Charter Oak is a fully public institution and part of Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU). It was specifically designed for adult learners and has awarded over 19,000 degrees. Charter Oak is 100% online and accepts transfer credit from CLEP, DSST, military training, and ACE/NCCRS providers like UPI Study. It participates in NC-SARA, allowing enrollment from all 50 states.
What degree programs does Charter Oak State College offer?
Charter Oak offers Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees across: Business Administration, Child Studies, Criminal Justice, Cyber Security, Data Analytics, Early Childhood Education, General Studies, Healthcare Administration, Health Information Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing, Organizational Leadership, Psychology, Public Safety Administration, Social Work, Software Development, Nursing (RN to BSN), and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Graduate programs include a Master of Science. Most programs are designed for working adults who can complete them entirely online using transfer credit, prior learning credit, and Charter Oak courses.
What did the Charter Oak staff review say about UPI Study course quality?
The review team’s comments (verbatim from the staff report):
• Course outcomes: “UPI Study course and program outcomes appear clearly defined within each course syllabus.”
• Instructor credentials: “It appears that the course developers had sufficient academic credentials” — though the team recommended assigning one credentialed instructor per course.
• Assessment: “UPI Study exams have a robust test bank and are AI-proctored.”
• Identity verification: Verified through mandatory onboarding call; the team recommended additional in-exam identity tools.
• Pass rates: Three-year pass rate data and average completion times for some courses impacted the number of courses approved.
• Renewal: If fewer than 5 students apply to Charter Oak in the three-year period, the agreement will not be extended.
Can military students use UPI Study credits at Charter Oak State College?
Yes. Charter Oak has a dedicated Military section in its catalog and is one of the most military-friendly colleges in the US. It accepts ACE-evaluated military training credits alongside UPI Study credits. Both use the same ACE recommendation standard. Military learners can combine military training ACE credits, CLEP, DSST, and UPI Study credits to build a near-complete degree before enrolling at Charter Oak. Many military students complete degrees at Charter Oak with only the Cornerstone and Capstone courses needed on-campus (online).
What is Charter Oak’s residency requirement?
Charter Oak requires that the Cornerstone course and Capstone course be taken directly at Charter Oak — these cannot be transferred in from any source. All other credit requirements can be fulfilled through transfer credit, prior learning, CLEP, DSST, or Charter Oak courses. This is one of the most flexible residency policies among US colleges and is why Charter Oak is ideal for students who already have substantial transfer credit.
Can I earn college credit without enrolling in a full degree program?
Yes. UPI Study allows you to take individual courses and earn ACE and NCCRS-recommended college credit completely independently — no university enrollment, no application, no admission process required. Complete the courses, get your official transcript, then submit it to Charter Oak’s Registrar for credit evaluation when you are ready to enroll.
How do I submit UPI Study transcripts to Charter Oak State College?
After completing UPI Study courses, request an official UPI Study transcript from your student dashboard. The transcript is submitted to Charter Oak State College’s Registrar office for evaluation. Charter Oak evaluates each transcript individually as part of the student’s degree planning process. For the 6 COSC-Verified courses, ensure the transcript clearly shows the numerical score (80% or higher) as required by the review team’s specifications. Contact
Charter Oak’s Registrar for current transcript submission instructions.
How does UPI Study compare to community college for Charter Oak credit?
Community college typically costs $300–$600 per credit hour, requires fixed class schedules, and involves semester deadlines. UPI Study offers ACE & NCCRS-recommended credits from $42/month (US) or $250/course (international) with no deadlines, no fixed class times, and no campus required — perfectly aligned with Charter Oak’s adult-learner model.
What happens if I need to pause or cancel my UPI Study subscription?
You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time with no penalty and no questions asked. Credits you’ve already earned remain valid permanently. If you pause and return later, you pick up exactly where you left off.
How many credits can I earn through UPI Study toward Charter Oak?
UPI Study offers up to 90 ACE and NCCRS-recommended credits — the equivalent of two full years of traditional college. Charter Oak’s generous transfer policy allows students to bring in the vast majority of their credits from non-Charter Oak sources. Combined with CLEP, DSST, military training, and other ACE/NCCRS sources, many students complete virtually all requirements except the Cornerstone and Capstone before enrolling at Charter Oak.
