Business Essentials is an introductory course that explains how businesses work and why they make the decisions they do. It covers core ideas such as supply and demand, business ownership, leadership, operations, ethics, and how companies respond to customers, workers, competitors, and government policy.
Business Essentials is a self-paced online course built around video lessons, quizzes, an assignment, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. Once you complete the course with a grade of C or higher, the 3 credits are eligible for transfer and Strayer recognizes them as ELC000 – General Elective.
The course teaches you how supply and demand, opportunity cost, market structure, and monetary policy shape the decisions businesses make. Those ideas show up in pricing, budgeting, hiring, and reading news about interest rates or trade. At Strayer, the credit counts toward elective requirements in degree plans such as the Associate in Arts and the Bachelor's degree, so the knowledge contributes to a degree you are already pursuing.
After you finish Business Essentials, the course provider sends your transcript to Strayer University. Strayer's registrar reviews the credit and applies it as ELC000 – General Elective, which counts toward your total credit hours and elective requirements. Strayer accepts up to 126 quarter hours toward a bachelor's degree from credit reviewed by ACE and NCCRS, so this course uses a small part of that allowance. Check your Strayer degree audit to confirm how the elective applies to your specific program.
This course suits adults who are returning to finish a degree, people moving into a business-related field from another line of work, and students who want to earn credit at a lower cost than sitting through a comparable Strayer course. Because Strayer recognizes it as a general elective rather than a specific business requirement, it fills open elective slots and does not replace a required course in your major. If you need a course that counts toward a particular major requirement or you cannot complete a self-paced format on your own schedule, this course is probably not the right fit.
Strayer University signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (effective 15 June 2025). Its 2026-2027 catalog accepts credit reviewed by ACE and NCCRS, with a grade of C or higher, up to 126 quarter hours toward a bachelor's degree.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Strayer determines, in its sole discretion, which credits qualify under the agreement and its transfer credit policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Strayer University.
