Computer Concepts and Applications is an introduction to how computers work, how people use them, and how technology affects everyday life and work. It covers the basic parts of a computer system, operating systems, files, networks, the Internet, online communication, and common security concerns. The course also introduces broader ideas such as the social and ethical effects of technology and how computers are used in different workplaces.
The course is self-paced and online, with video lessons, quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Your grade is split evenly across 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam, so consistent work through the term counts as much as the last exam. Once you complete the course with a grade of C or higher, the transcript credit is what Strayer recognizes as CIS101 – Navigating a Digital World.
The course covers computer hardware, operating systems, files, networks, the Internet, online communication, and common security concerns, which come up in most office and home technology tasks. It also looks at how computers affect different workplaces, which is useful when your role or employer changes. At Strayer, the credit can be applied within programs such as the Associate in Arts or a Bachelor's degree, so these skills count toward a credential you are already working toward.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Strayer, where the registrar reviews it and applies CIS101 – Navigating a Digital World to your record. The named equivalency means the credit posts as a specific catalog course, so it can be tracked in your degree plan like any other course. Strayer's 2026-2027 catalog accepts credit reviewed by ACE and NCCRS with a grade of C or higher, up to 126 quarter hours toward a bachelor's degree, under an articulation agreement with UPI Study effective 15 June 2025. Plan your remaining coursework with that 126-credit ceiling in mind.
This course suits students who plan to earn a Strayer degree and want to reduce what they pay at $518 per credit, including working adults returning to school and people changing fields. Because Strayer recognizes it as a named equivalency, CIS101 – Navigating a Digital World, it fills a specific catalog course rather than a general elective, and transfer is capped at 126 credits, or 70% of the degree. It is not a good fit for anyone who is not pursuing a Strayer credential, since the recognition applies only there, or for anyone who needs a grade below C to count toward the degree.
Strayer University signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (effective 15 June 2025). Its 2026-2027 catalog accepts credit reviewed by ACE and NCCRS, with a grade of C or higher, up to 126 quarter hours toward a bachelor's degree.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Strayer determines, in its sole discretion, which credits qualify under the agreement and its transfer credit policies.
