Chemistry I vs Intro to Biology 1: which science first?

Chemistry I is about matter: atoms, bonding, reactions, gases, solutions, equilibrium and energy. Intro to Biology 1 is about life: cells, energy, genetics and evolution. It opens with its own chemistry chapters, and neither syllabus lists a prerequisite, so take the one your program asks for first.

Both are self-paced: quizzes and the assignment are open-book, the final is proctored, and 70 or higher passes. Neither lecture includes a lab; Chemistry I has a separate lab course, and Intro to Biology 1 has none.

Which one should you take first?

No prerequisites: start with the one your program needs.

Take Chemistry I if

  • Your program lists general chemistry or Chemistry I
  • You need a chemistry or physical science credit
  • You may add the Chemistry Lab

Take Biology 1 if

  • Your program lists introductory biology
  • You need a biology or natural science credit
  • You want cells, genetics and evolution

Questions, answered

Should I take chemistry or biology first?

Either. Neither of these two courses lists a prerequisite, so take the one your program asks for first. Intro to Biology 1 covers the chemistry it needs in its own early chapters, so it does not expect Chemistry I.

Is photosynthesis chemistry or biology?

In these two courses, biology: Intro to Biology 1 has a chapter on cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Chemistry I studies the energy of reactions in its thermochemistry and thermodynamics chapters, but has no chapter on photosynthesis.

Do Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1 include a lab?

No, both are lecture courses. Chemistry I has a separate lab course, Chemistry Lab (CHEM 111L), with an NCCRS recommendation for 1 semester hour, done as virtual labs online. See lab vs non-lab science credit.

What will I learn in Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1?

Chemistry I (Chemistry 111) covers atoms, bonding, stoichiometry, gases, solutions, reaction rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics and electrochemistry. Intro to Biology 1 (Biology 100) covers the chemistry of life, cells and membranes, metabolism, respiration and photosynthesis, genetics, gene expression and evolution.

How many credits are Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1?

Chemistry I: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Chemistry among other subjects; ACE recommends 3 (ACE ID UPIS-0008). Intro to Biology 1: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology I and II among other subjects; ACE recommends 3 (ACE ID UPIS-0009).

Which subjects can Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1 count toward?

Chemistry I: Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physical Science. Intro to Biology 1: Biology I and II, Ecology, Natural Science, or Integrated Science. Your college decides which requirement each one fills.

How long are Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1?

Chemistry I is longer by its syllabus. Chemistry I: 17 chapters and 76 instructional hours. Intro to Biology 1: 15 chapters and 66 instructional hours. Both are self-paced, so you finish as fast or as slow as you want.

How are the Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1 final exams set up?

Chemistry I: 100 multiple-choice questions, 50% of the grade. Intro to Biology 1: 118 multiple-choice questions, 50% of the grade.

What counts toward the grade in Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1?

Both use one split: quizzes 20%, the assignment 30%, the final exam 50%. A pass is 70 or more.

Which textbooks do Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1 use?

Chemistry I: Flowers, Paul, et al. Chemistry 2e. OpenStax, 2019, with other references. Intro to Biology 1: Clark, Mary Ann, Matthew Douglas, and Jung Choi. Biology 2e. OpenStax, 2018.

Do Chemistry I and Intro to Biology 1 have ACE recommendations?

Chemistry I: yes, ACE ID UPIS-0008, 3 semester hours. Intro to Biology 1: yes, ACE ID UPIS-0009, 3 semester hours. ACE listings run three years and UPI Study renews them as they end; credit you have earned stays valid for 10 years.

What comes after Intro to Biology 1?

Intro to Biology 2. In the “General biology” order on the Science and labs courses page, it follows Intro to Biology 1. Your program may set its own order.

What if I fail the Chemistry I final?

Take it again: a failed Chemistry I final comes with one free retake. A passed final can be retaken too, but the original score stands; for quizzes, the average of your first two attempts counts.

Who sends the Chemistry I transcript to my college?

You never forward it yourself. When Chemistry I reaches 100%, pay the $20 transcript on your Student Dashboard (www.upistudy.com/enrollments); after you pay, the dashboard takes you to the transcript request, you type in your college's transcript address, and UPI Study's registrar emails it there; a confirmation email follows. As an ACE course, it is also issued as a Credly badge.
