A&P 1 vs Intro to Biology 1: which one first?

Intro to Biology 1 is general biology: the chemistry of life, cells, energy, genetics and evolution. Anatomy and Physiology I is about the human body: tissues, skin, bones, muscles, nerves and hormones. Its syllabus lists no prerequisite and opens with its own chemistry and cell chapters, so you do not need Biology 1 first.

Which one should you take first?

No prerequisite either way. Start with the one your program lists.

Take A&P I if

  • Your program lists Anatomy and Physiology I
  • You are heading into nursing or another health field
  • You want the human body, system by system

Take Biology 1 if

  • Your program lists introductory or general biology
  • Your college takes ACE recommendations
  • You want cells, genetics and evolution

Questions, answered

Do I need to take biology before anatomy and physiology?

Not for our course: the Anatomy and Physiology I syllabus lists no prerequisite, and it starts with its own chapters on chemistry, cells and tissues. Your program may set its own order, so check its list. If it names both, you can take these two in either order or at the same time.

What is the difference between biology and anatomy and physiology?

Intro to Biology 1 (Biology 100) is general biology: the chemistry of life, cells, metabolism, genetics and evolution, across all living things. Anatomy and Physiology I (Biology 211) is about the human body: tissues, skin, bones, joints, muscles, the nervous system and the endocrine system. Both begin with chemistry and cells.

Which carries an ACE recommendation: Anatomy and Physiology I or Intro to Biology 1?

Intro to Biology 1: ACE recommends 3 semester hours (ACE ID UPIS-0009), and NCCRS recommends 3 as well. Anatomy and Physiology I is NCCRS only: 3 semester hours in Biology, Life Science, or Biological Science.

How many credits are Anatomy and Physiology I and Intro to Biology 1?

Anatomy and Physiology I: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology among other subjects. Intro to Biology 1: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology I and II among other subjects; ACE recommends 3 (ACE ID UPIS-0009).

What subject areas do Anatomy and Physiology I and Intro to Biology 1 count in?

Anatomy and Physiology I: Biology, Life Science, or Biological Science. Intro to Biology 1: Biology I and II, Ecology, Natural Science, or Integrated Science. Your college decides which requirement each one fills.

Which is longer, Anatomy and Physiology I or Intro to Biology 1?

Intro to Biology 1 is longer by its syllabus. Anatomy and Physiology I: 17 chapters and 58 instructional hours. Intro to Biology 1: 15 chapters and 66 instructional hours. Both are self-paced, so you finish as fast or as slow as you want.
