Abnormal Psychology is the study of patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that may be distressing, disruptive, or outside typical functioning, and how psychologists understand and respond to them. It looks at how mental disorders are defined, how they are diagnosed using systems like the DSM, and what biological, psychological, and social factors may contribute to them.
Abnormal Psychology (Psychology 180, 3 credits) is a self-paced online course built on video lessons, quizzes, a written assignment, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignment, and 50% final exam, so the exam matters most. When you complete the course, the transcript entry is what Pathways reviews, and it is recognized there as General Elective (Pathways).
The course explains how mental disorders are defined and diagnosed, including the DSM, and how biological, cognitive, and social factors contribute to them. Those skills apply to human services, healthcare support, HR, and teaching roles where recognizing distress or changes in behavior is part of the job. At Pathways, the 3 credits count toward total credit hours and elective requirements in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, so the coursework also fills a real slot in your degree.
After you finish the course, the transcript goes to Pathways College through UPI Study. The Pathways registrar applies General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements. In practice, the credit fills elective space in your degree plan and does not replace a named general education or major requirement. Pathways allows up to 90 credits (75%) to transfer, and this course counts toward that limit.
This course suits students who want a psychology elective to count toward a Pathways degree without sitting in a campus classroom, including working adults finishing a degree, people considering a career change, and students who are keeping costs down at Pathways's $206 per-credit rate. Because it is recognized as a General Elective rather than a general education or major course, it will not satisfy a required psychology major course. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so this 3-credit course uses a small share of that allowance. It is not the right choice if you need a course that fulfills a specific major or general education requirement, or a prerequisite for a clinical credential.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
