Cybersecurity is the study of how to protect computers, networks, software, and data from unauthorized access, damage, and disruption. In this course, students learn the basic threats people and organizations face, such as malware, phishing, weak passwords, web attacks, and insecure systems, along with the methods used to reduce those risks.
Cybersecurity is a self-paced online course built around video lessons, quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignments, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the most weight but earlier work still counts for a meaningful share. When you complete the course, the credit appears on your transcript, and Pathways recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways).
The course covers the threats most people and organizations meet, including malware, phishing, weak passwords, web attacks, and insecure systems, along with the methods used to reduce those risks. Those skills apply in many jobs and in everyday online habits, from spotting a fraudulent message to understanding how data should be protected. At Pathways, the credit counts toward total hours and elective requirements in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, so it contributes to a degree while you build practical knowledge.
After you finish the course, the transcript is sent to Pathways, where the registrar applies the credit as General Elective (Pathways). This is an elective equivalency, so it counts toward your total credit hours and your elective requirements rather than a named course in your major. Pathways allows up to 90 credits (75%) to transfer in total, and this course counts within that limit. Review your degree plan with an advisor to see how the elective credit affects your remaining requirements.
This course suits students who want a practical understanding of online security and who plan to use transfer credit to reduce the number of courses they take at Pathways, including working adults, students returning to finish a degree, and people changing careers. Because it is recognized as an elective rather than a required course, it fills open elective slots and does not satisfy a specific major or general education requirement. If you need a particular requirement met, confirm that with a Pathways advisor before enrolling. The transfer ceiling of 90 credits, or 75%, also applies, so plan how this credit fits alongside any other transfer work.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
