Data Structure and Algorithms is the study of how to organize data in a computer and how to solve problems efficiently with that data. In this course, you learn Java programming along with tools like arrays, linked lists, trees, queues, stacks, and hash tables, then use them to write and analyze algorithms. The subject also includes Big-O notation, which helps you compare how fast or memory-heavy different solutions are.
The course is self-paced and online. You work through video lessons on your own schedule, then show what you have learned through quizzes and an assignment before taking the final exam. Grades are weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignment, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the most weight. Once you complete the course, the credit goes on your transcript, and Pathways College recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
Arrays, linked lists, trees, queues, stacks, and hash tables are the structures you use to store and retrieve data in Java, and Big-O notation gives you a way to compare how quickly and how much memory different solutions need. Those skills apply to programming work that involves Java and to any project where data volume affects performance. At Pathways, the credit fills elective space in an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts, so the material can count toward a degree you are already working toward.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College. The Pathways registrar applies General Elective (Pathways) to your record, which counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements in your degree plan. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, and this course counts within that ceiling. Pathways' articulation agreement with UPI Study also allows elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits, so confirm with a Pathways advisor how this course fits your Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts plan.
This course suits people who want hands-on programming skills while keeping a degree on track. That includes working adults who study around a job, students finishing a degree who need elective credit, and people moving into software-related work who want a structured start. Pathways treats the course as an elective, not as a major or general education requirement, so it fills open elective slots rather than specific required courses. Transfer credit overall is capped at 90 credits (75%), so plan your remaining coursework with that limit in mind. It is not a good fit if you need a course that satisfies a particular major or general education requirement, or if you prefer live, in-person instruction.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
