Database Fundamentals is an introduction to how data is organized, stored, and managed in computer systems. It covers the basic ideas behind databases, including tables, records, fields, relationships, SQL, and the rules used to keep data accurate and secure. The course also shows how different database designs are used in real settings, from simple relational databases to other common models.
Database Fundamentals is a self-paced online course built on video lessons, with quizzes and an assignment along the way and a final exam at the end. Quizzes count for 20% of the grade, assignments for 30%, and the final exam for 50%, so the exam carries the most weight. Completing the course produces a transcript entry that Pathways College recognizes as BUS231 – Database Management Systems.
The course covers tables, records, fields, relationships, SQL, and the rules that keep data accurate and secure, which are the basics behind much of the reporting and data work done in business settings. At Pathways, the credit lands as a named catalog course, BUS231 – Database Management Systems, that can appear within an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts. A named course is easier to explain to an employer or a graduate program than a general elective labeled only as transfer credit.
After you finish the course, the transcript is sent to Pathways College, where the registrar applies it as BUS231 – Database Management Systems under the articulation agreement Pathways signed with UPI Study in July 2025. Because this is a named course equivalency, the credit maps to a specific course in the Pathways catalog and can be shown in your degree plan under that code rather than as an unassigned elective. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, and the agreement separately allows up to 48 credits of elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major. Confirm your remaining credit room with the Pathways registrar before you enroll.
This course suits working adults and career changers who want a database course that Pathways recognizes by name, and students finishing an Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts who need to keep their transfer total within limits. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so a student already close to that ceiling should check remaining room before enrolling. It is not a good fit for anyone who needs deep, hands-on practice writing queries in one particular DBMS, since the course is introductory and centers on concepts, terminology, and comparing database models.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
