Ethics in the Social Sciences looks at how people decide what is right and wrong in fields such as counseling, psychology, social work, and research. It introduces major moral theories, including ideas about moral development, consequentialist and non-consequentialist ethics, and ethical traditions from Western, Eastern, and global perspectives.
The course is self-paced and online, with video lessons, quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Each of four parts counts for 25% of your grade: attendance, quizzes, assignments, and the final exam. When you complete the course, the 3-credit transcript entry is what Pathways reviews, and Pathways recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
The course teaches you to separate moral theory from the choice in front of you, which matters in counseling, psychology, social work, and research. Working through consequentialist and non-consequentialist reasoning helps when every option has a cost for a client, participant, or colleague. At Pathways, the 3 credits fill elective space in an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts plan, so the ethics coursework also moves you closer to finishing that degree.
After you finish, your transcript is sent to Pathways College, and the registrar applies the course as General Elective (Pathways). As an elective equivalency, it counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements in your degree plan rather than replacing a named course. Pathways caps transfer credit at 90 credits, or 75% of the total, and these 3 credits count toward that limit. Pathways is an active transfer partner of UPI Study, so confirm with Pathways advising how the credit fits your specific program before you enroll.
This course suits adults balancing jobs with schoolwork, people closing out a partly finished degree, and those moving into counseling or social work who want to use credit they already earned. Because Pathways treats it as elective credit, it works best where your plan still has open electives to fill. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so anyone near that ceiling should confirm remaining capacity before enrolling. It is not the right choice for a student who needs this course to satisfy a specific Pathways major or general education requirement, since its recognition is as an elective only.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
