Fundamentals of Information Technology is an introduction to how computer systems support business work. It covers the basic parts of information systems, hardware and software, data and databases, networks, security, and how IT helps organizations make decisions and run processes. The course gives students a broad view of how computers, data, and business needs fit together.
The course is self-paced and online, built around video lessons, with quizzes and an assignment along the way and a final exam at the end. Grades are weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignments, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the most weight. When you finish, the course credit appears on your transcript, and Pathways recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways).
The course covers how businesses use hardware, data storage, networks, security, and databases, and it includes SQL queries for business intelligence. Those topics apply to much of the work done around business data and systems. At Pathways, the credit counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, so the knowledge contributes to a degree you are already working toward.
After you complete the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways. The Pathways registrar applies General Elective (Pathways) to your record, and the credit counts toward your total credit hours and elective requirements. Because this is an elective equivalency, it fills elective space in your degree plan rather than a specific named course. Transfer credit at Pathways is capped at 90 credits, which is 75% of the degree, so confirm how many credits you have left to earn before you enroll.
This course suits students who want to fill elective space at Pathways at a lower cost, including working adults finishing a degree, career changers who need a broad view of business technology, and students who already hold UPI Study credit. Because Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, plan your remaining credits with that ceiling in mind. It is not a good fit for anyone who needs this course to satisfy a required major or general education course, since Pathways recognizes it as an elective, or for anyone looking for an intensive programming course, since it is an introductory overview.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
