Introduction to Criminology is the study of crime as a social and legal phenomenon. It looks at how crime is defined, how it is measured, why people offend, how victimization affects individuals and communities, and how different theories explain criminal behavior.
Introduction to Criminology is delivered online at your own pace through video lessons, with quizzes and an assignment along the way and a final exam at the end. Your grade is split evenly across four parts: 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. When you pass the course, the 3 credits appear on your transcript, and Pathways College recognizes them as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
The course covers how crime is defined in law, how it gets measured, why people offend, and how victimization affects individuals and communities. Those skills carry over into work in corrections, victim services, community programs, and policy roles, and they give context to news and public debate about crime. At Pathways, the 3 elective credits can be applied within an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts, so the coursework contributes to a degree you are already working toward rather than standing alone.
After you complete Introduction to Criminology, your official transcript is sent to Pathways College. The Pathways registrar then applies the course as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that adds 3 credits toward your total hours and your elective requirements. Because it is an elective rather than a named equivalent, it fills open elective space in your Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts plan and does not satisfy a specific major or general education requirement. Pathways allows up to 90 credits (75%) to transfer in total, so this course counts toward that limit along with any other transfer work you bring.
This course suits students who want to reduce the number of courses they must take at Pathways and who are looking for a lower-cost route to elective credit. It can also work for adults returning to finish a degree, or people considering a move into criminal justice who want a structured look at the field first. Because Pathways treats it as a general elective rather than a named course in the major, it will not replace a specific requirement, so students who need a required criminology or criminal justice course should check their degree plan first. The 90-credit (75%) transfer limit applies to all transfer work combined, so students with a large amount of prior credit should plan around that ceiling.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
