Introduction to JavaScript is a beginner course in programming for the web. It covers the basics of HTML and CSS as they relate to JavaScript, then moves into variables, operators, conditionals, loops, functions, objects, data structures, the Document Object Model (DOM), and form handling. In simple terms, it teaches how websites can respond to user actions and change on the page.
Introduction to Javascript (Computer Science 190) is a self-paced online course built around video lessons. It opens with the HTML and CSS basics that JavaScript depends on, then covers variables, conditionals, loops, functions, objects, the DOM, and form handling. Grades are weighted 20% Quizzes, 30% Assignments, and 50% Final Exam, so the final exam carries the most weight. Once a student completes the course, the transcript entry is what Pathways recognizes as General Elective (Pathways), a 3-credit elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
The course teaches students to plan a program with pseudocode, set up a JavaScript development environment, find and fix errors, and make a page respond to user actions. Those skills apply to building and maintaining web forms, interactive pages, and small front-end tools. At Pathways, the credit lands as an elective rather than a required course, so it can fill an open elective slot in an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts plan. A student gets the programming exposure without having to swap out a required course to make room for it.
After a student completes the course, the official transcript is sent to Pathways College, and the Pathways registrar applies the credit as General Elective (Pathways). The credit counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements, but it is not a named course equivalent, so it will not replace a specific Pathways course. Pathways College has an articulation agreement with UPI Study that allows elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits. All transfer credit combined may not exceed 90 credits, which is 75% of the degree.
This course suits students who want a first, structured look at web programming and who need elective credit toward a Pathways degree. Working adults who want to add practical web skills, students finishing an associate or bachelor's degree who still have elective hours to fill, and cost-conscious students who want to reduce tuition are a good fit. At Pathways' rate of $206 per credit, a 3-credit elective is $618 in tuition, and the transfer ceiling of 90 credits (75%) limits how much of a degree can come in from outside. It is not the right choice for a student who needs a specific required course or a major requirement filled, since the Pathways recognition is an elective equivalency. Students who already know JavaScript and want advanced material will also find it too basic.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
