Introduction to Networking is a course about how computers and other devices connect, communicate, and share data. It covers the basic ideas behind networks such as LANs, WANs, WLANs, and VPNs, along with the standards and protocols that let information move reliably across them. You also learn how the Internet works at a basic level, including IP addressing, DNS, routing, and the OSI and TCP/IP models.
Introduction to Networking (Computer Science 196) is a self-paced online course built around video lessons, quizzes, an assignment component, and a final exam. Your final grade is weighted equally across four parts: 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. Completing the 3-credit course creates a transcript entry that Pathways College recognizes as General Elective (Pathways).
The course covers LANs, WANs, WLANs, VPNs, IP addressing, DNS, routing, and the OSI and TCP/IP models, which gives you a working vocabulary for troubleshooting connections and discussing infrastructure with IT staff. At Pathways, the 3 credits fill elective space in programs such as the Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts, so the knowledge and the credit both carry into your degree plan.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College, where the registrar applies it as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements. For your degree plan, this means the 3 credits reduce the open elective hours you need in an Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts, rather than satisfying a particular major or general education course. Pathways allows up to 90 credits (75%) to transfer, and this course counts toward that total along with any other transfer credit you bring in.
This course suits students who want credit toward a Pathways degree while building practical knowledge of how networks function, including working adults, people changing careers into technical fields, and students who want to keep costs down by using credit they already have access to. Because it is recognized as an elective rather than a named major or general education course, it is most useful for students who still have open elective hours. Its 3 credits count within Pathways' 90-credit (75%) transfer ceiling, so students already close to that limit should check their remaining room first. It is not the right choice for anyone who needs a specific major or general education requirement filled, since this credit applies only as an elective.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
