Introduction to Java is a first course in computer programming using the Java language. It teaches you how to write simple programs, use variables and data types, make decisions with conditionals, repeat tasks with loops, and organize code into functions and classes. It also introduces basic problem solving, arrays, input and output, and the foundations of object-oriented programming.
Introduction to Java is a self-paced online course built from video lessons, with quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted 25% attendance, 25% quizzes, 25% assignments, and 25% final exam. Once you complete the course and the credit posts to your transcript, Pathways College recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
The course teaches variables, conditionals, loops, functions, classes, and arrays, which are the building blocks for scripting, data handling, and later software courses. At Pathways, the credit lands as a General Elective, so it fills open elective space in programs such as the Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts. You gain practical programming skills while the credit moves your degree forward.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College, and Pathways's registrar applies the credit as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency. The three credits count toward total credit hours and elective requirements, so they fill elective space in your degree plan rather than a required major or general education course. Pathways accepts up to 90 transferred credits, which is 75% of the total, and this course counts toward that ceiling along with any other transfer work.
This course suits learners who are balancing work and study, students close to finishing a degree, and people considering a move into software or data-related work who want a first programming credit at a lower cost. Pathways accepts up to 90 transfer credits (75%), and this course's General Elective recognition counts toward elective requirements and total hours, so it works best when you still have open elective space. It is not a good fit if you need a Java course to satisfy a specific major or general education requirement, since Pathways recognizes it only as an elective. It is also a weaker choice if you have never written code and want more instructor-led guidance than a self-paced format offers.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
