Introduction to Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups, how social rules and institutions shape behavior, and why societies develop patterns such as inequality, deviance, and cultural differences. It looks at everyday life through a social lens, asking how family, school, work, government, race, gender, and other forces influence individual choices and opportunities.
The course is self-paced and online, built around video lessons, quizzes, an assignment component, and a final exam. Grades are weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignments, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the largest share of your grade. Completing the course generates a transcript entry that Pathways College recognizes as General Elective (Pathways).
Introduction to Sociology trains you to see how family, school, work, and government shape the choices people make, and to test claims about inequality or social change against research methods. Those habits carry into many workplaces, especially roles that involve public services, policy, human resources, or community programs. At Pathways, the credit applies as an elective within programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, so it contributes to the total hours you need to finish either one.
After you complete Introduction to Sociology, UPI Study sends your transcript to Pathways College, where the registrar applies it as General Elective (Pathways). The equivalency counts toward your total credit hours and your elective requirements, which means it reduces the elective hours you still need to earn at Pathways. It does not count toward general education or major requirements under this designation. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so this course counts within that overall limit.
This course suits students who want to finish a Pathways degree with fewer remaining elective hours, including working adults returning to school, people changing careers, and students watching their costs. Because Pathways recognizes it only as an elective, it will not fill a general education or major requirement, so students who need a specific course in those categories should look elsewhere. It is also a poor fit for anyone who expects it to satisfy a major's upper-level sociology sequence. Keep in mind that Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer overall, so plan the rest of your degree around that ceiling.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
