Medical Terminology is the study of the words used in healthcare to describe the body, diseases, procedures, tests, and treatments. It focuses on how medical terms are built from prefixes, suffixes, and root words, so you can understand what a term means even if you have never seen it before. The course also introduces common abbreviations and the language used across major body systems.
Medical Terminology is a self-paced online course built around video lessons, quizzes, assignments, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted equally across four parts: 25% attendance, 25% quizzes, 25% assignments, and 25% final exam, so consistent work through the term counts as much as the last test. When you complete the course, the 3 credits appear on your transcript, and Pathways recognizes them as General Elective (Pathways).
Medical terms are built from prefixes, suffixes, and root words, so once you learn those parts you can work out unfamiliar language on charts, lab reports, and insurance forms without guessing. These skills are useful in healthcare-adjacent jobs such as billing, medical records, and patient communication. At Pathways, the 3 credits count toward total credit hours in an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts, so the course contributes to your degree even though it is not a major requirement.
Once your transcript is sent to Pathways College, the registrar applies the course as General Elective (Pathways). That means it counts toward your total credit hours and elective requirements, but it does not stand in for a named major or general education course. Transfer credit at Pathways is capped at 90 credits, which is 75% of the degree, so keep that ceiling in mind as you plan the rest of your coursework. Check with a Pathways advisor to confirm how these 3 elective credits fit your specific program.
This course suits working adults, people finishing a partly completed degree, and career changers who want a low-cost way to learn healthcare vocabulary while earning credit. Because Pathways treats it as elective credit, it fills open space in your plan, and you can transfer up to 90 credits (75%) toward your degree. It is not the right choice if you need a course that satisfies a specific Pathways major or general education requirement, or if you are looking for hands-on clinical training, since the course covers terminology and language rather than clinical practice.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
