Principles of Finance is the study of how money is used, valued, and managed in business decisions. It covers how companies raise and spend capital, how to read financial statements, and how to judge whether an investment or project is worth pursuing. The course also introduces the basic tools used to compare future and present value, risk, and return.
Principles of Finance (Finance 201) is a self-paced online course built on video lessons, quizzes, an assignment, and a final exam. Grades are weighted 20% quizzes, 30% assignments, and 50% final exam, so the exam carries the most weight. When you pass the course, the credit appears on your transcript as 3 credits, and Pathways College recognizes that transcript credit as General Elective (Pathways).
The course teaches you how to value money over time, weigh risk against return, read financial statements, and compare investments using NPV and IRR. Those skills apply to budgeting a department, evaluating a purchase, or reviewing a business plan. At Pathways, the 3 credits count toward total credit hours in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, where they fill elective space rather than a specific requirement.
After you finish Finance 201, UPI Study sends your transcript to Pathways College. The Pathways registrar then applies the course as General Elective (Pathways), which means it counts toward your total credit hours and your elective requirements. Your degree plan will treat those 3 credits as elective credit, so check with your advisor that no other requirement needs them. Pathways accepts up to 90 transfer credits, which is 75% of the degree, and this course counts toward that limit.
This course suits working adults who want a quantitative business course that is easy to fit around a job, degree-finishers who need a few more elective credits to reach their total, and students who want to lower the cost of their Pathways degree by transferring credit instead of paying per credit for an elective. Because Pathways recognizes the course only as a General Elective, it does not fill a required finance, accounting, or general education slot, and it is not the right choice for a student who needs a specific course in that category. Students should also keep in mind that transfer credit is capped at 90 credits (75%), so this course uses part of that allowance.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
