Principles of Philosophy introduces the basic questions philosophers ask about knowledge, reality, morality, religion, and human freedom. It also shows how to read arguments carefully, spot weak reasoning, and compare different ways of thinking about the same issue. In a course like this, you study both classic ideas and the methods used to examine them.
Principles of Philosophy is a self-paced online course, so you work through the video lessons on your own schedule. Your grade combines quizzes (20%), assignments (30%), and a final exam (50%), and the final exam carries the most weight, so steady work on the assignments matters. Once you complete the course, the credit appears on your transcript, and Pathways College recognizes it as General Elective (Pathways).
The course trains you to read an argument closely, find its hidden assumptions, and judge whether its conclusion follows. Those habits carry over to writing reports, evaluating policy or workplace decisions, and weighing competing claims in everyday life. At Pathways, the credit counts toward total hours and elective requirements in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts, so the skills and the credit both apply to your degree plan.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College, and the Pathways registrar applies it as General Elective (Pathways). This is an elective equivalency, so the three credits count toward your total credit hours and your elective requirements rather than a specific named course. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, and this course counts toward that total.
This course suits students who want to finish a Pathways credential without spending on courses that do not fit their degree, including adults returning to school, students close to completion who need elective hours, and people changing careers who want a broad introduction to ethical and analytical reasoning. Because Pathways treats the course as an elective, it cannot fill a general education or major requirement, so students who need a specific course in those areas should look elsewhere. Pathways also caps transfer at 90 credits, or 75% of a degree, so a student who has already transferred near that limit will have less room for this course.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
