Research Methods in Psychology is the study of how psychologists ask questions, collect evidence, and decide whether a claim is supported by data. It covers how to tell scientific research from non-scientific claims, how studies are designed, and how results are interpreted. The course also introduces ethics, measurement, and different ways researchers gather information about behavior and mental processes.
Students work through video lessons at their own pace in this self-paced online course, completing quizzes and an assignment along the way before a final exam. Grades are weighted 25% attendance, 25% quizzes, 25% assignments, and 25% final exam. Once the course is completed, the resulting transcript credit is what Pathways recognizes as General Elective (Pathways), which counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements.
The ability to separate a well-supported claim from a weak one, read a survey or study with a critical eye, and make sense of basic descriptive and inferential statistics applies in most jobs that involve data. At Pathways, the credit is recognized as a General Elective (Pathways) and can be applied within programs such as the Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts, filling elective space in either one. Students who later move into a major that relies on evidence or research will already have this foundation on their record.
After you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College, where the registrar applies the credit as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward total credit hours and elective requirements in your degree plan. Because this is an elective recognition and not a named course equivalent, it fills an open elective slot rather than a specific requirement. Pathways accepts up to 90 transfer credits, which is 75% of a degree, so this course counts toward that limit along with any other transferred work. Review your remaining requirements with an advisor before deciding how many transfer credits to bring in.
This course suits working adults and degree-finishers who need elective credit toward an Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts at Pathways and would rather bring in a course they can complete online on their own schedule. Career changers who expect to evaluate or produce research in a new role may also benefit from the material. Because Pathways treats it as an elective rather than a named requirement, it is not a fit for anyone who needs a specific general education or major course filled, and students who are close to the 90-credit transfer ceiling should plan carefully before adding it.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
