Software Engineering is the study of how software is planned, built, tested, and maintained in an organized way. It covers the methods used to turn a problem or set of requirements into a working program, including how teams gather needs, design the system, choose a development process, and check that the result works as intended.
Software Engineering is a self-paced online course built around video lessons, with grades weighted 20% quizzes, 30% one assignment, and 50% a final exam. You set your own pace through the material, and completing the course produces a transcript entry that Pathways College recognizes as General Elective (Pathways).
The course teaches how a set of requirements becomes working software: gathering needs, designing the system, choosing a development process, and testing the result. These habits carry into jobs that involve planning or reviewing software projects, whether or not the title includes the word engineer. At Pathways, the credit counts as elective credit that can apply toward an Associate degree or a Bachelor of Arts.
After you complete the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College. The Pathways registrar applies the course as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward your total credit hours and elective requirements. Pathways accepts up to 90 transferred credits (75%), so keep track of how much transfer credit you have already been awarded. Review the elective with a Pathways advisor to confirm where it fits in your Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts plan.
This course suits working adults who want to fill elective slots without a large time commitment, degree-finishers who need a few remaining credits, and career changers who want a structured look at how software is built. Cost-conscious students also benefit, since each transferred credit is one fewer credit to pay for at Pathways's rate of $206 per credit. Because Pathways accepts up to 90 transfer credits (75%), this course counts toward that ceiling. It is not the right choice if you need a specific course equivalency rather than an elective, or if you are looking for a course centered on hands-on programming, since the stated outcomes emphasize analysis, evaluation, and design.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
Enroll for $250 (or use a UPI Study subscription), finish in 28–30 days, and transfer 3 credits to Pathways College.
