System Analysis and Design is the study of how to understand a business or software problem, gather requirements, and plan a system that solves it. It focuses on the steps used to move from a need or idea to a working system, including analysis, modeling, design, and testing different development approaches such as Agile, spiral, iterative, and V-shaped methods.
The course is self-paced and fully online, built around video lessons, quizzes, an assignment, and a final exam. Your grade is weighted equally across four parts: 25% Attendance, 25% Quizzes, 25% Assignments, and 25% Final Exam. Completing the course produces the transcript entry that Pathways evaluates and applies as General Elective (Pathways).
System analysis work starts with a vague request or problem, narrows down what the people involved actually need, and lays out a plan for a system that meets that need. Those habits transfer to business analysis, project coordination, and software development, and the course's coverage of Agile, spiral, iterative, and V-shaped methods gives you vocabulary for discussing how projects get delivered. At Pathways, the credit counts toward total credit hours in programs such as the Associate degree and the Bachelor of Arts.
Once you finish the course, your transcript is sent to Pathways College. The Pathways registrar reviews it and applies the course as General Elective (Pathways), an elective equivalency that counts toward your total credit hours and your elective requirements. In your degree plan, this reduces the open elective credits you still need, but it does not fulfill a named course. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, and this 3-credit course counts toward that total.
This course suits people who want a Pathways credit without taking a standard classroom course, including working adults who need flexible scheduling, students finishing an Associate degree or Bachelor of Arts, and people moving into IT or business roles. Pathways recognizes it as a general elective rather than a named requirement, so it fills open elective slots and does not replace a required course in your major. Pathways accepts up to 90 credits (75%) in transfer, so this course is one of several transfer credits counted toward that ceiling. It is not a good fit if you need a specific major requirement satisfied or if you prefer a live, instructor-led format.
Pathways College signed an articulation agreement with UPI Study (July 2025): 17 named course equivalents, plus elective credit for other UPI Study courses not used for general education or the major, up to 48 credits.
Transfer credits are never guaranteed. Pathways College's Registrar reviews and grants transfer credit under Pathways' policies.
