A&P lecture vs A&P lab: do you need both?

The lecture, Anatomy and Physiology I (Biology 211), teaches the body through lessons, quizzes, an assignment and a final exam. The lab, Anatomy and Physiology I Lab (Biology 211L), is a separate course of virtual lab simulations, each written up as a lab report. You need both only if your program asks for A&P with a lab; A&P 2 has its own lab the same way.

Need both?
Only if your program asks for a lab
Lab on its own?
Yes, without the lecture
Credit
Lecture 3, lab 2 semester hours

What you learn

From the two syllabi: the lab works through the lecture's body systems as hands-on virtual labs.

Only in the lecture

  • The tissue level
  • The sense organs
  • The autonomic nervous system
  • The neurological exam

In both

  • Body organization
  • Chemistry of life
  • Cells and membrane transport
  • Skin
  • Skeleton and joints
  • Muscles and levers
  • Nervous system
  • Endocrine system

What the lab adds

  • Virtual lab simulations
  • Measurements you take yourself
  • Data randomized for each student
  • A lab report for each lab

Both are self-paced and online. In each lab you run the instruments and take your own measurements, and your data differs from every other student's. The lab's syllabus recommends taking it alongside the lecture, but a lab can be taken on its own.

Do you need both?

Take both if your program asks for A&P with a lab.

Take the lecture if

  • Your program lists Anatomy and Physiology I
  • You need the 3-semester-hour course
  • You do not need a lab, or took it elsewhere

Take the lab if

  • Your program asks for A&P with a lab
  • You take the lecture here or took it at another college
  • Your college takes a virtual lab: ask first

Questions, answered

Do I need the A&P lab as well as the lecture?

Only if your program asks for a lab. The lecture (Biology 211) and the lab (Biology 211L) are separate courses with separate NCCRS recommendations: 3 semester hours for the lecture and 2 for the lab. If your requirement says Anatomy and Physiology with lab, take both, and ask your college whether it takes a virtual lab.

Can I take Anatomy and Physiology 2 with a lab online?

Yes. Anatomy and Physiology 2 (Biology 212) has its own lab, Anatomy and Physiology 2 Lab (Biology 212L): virtual labs on blood, the heart, breathing, digestion, the kidneys and reproduction, with an NCCRS recommendation for 2 semester hours. Its syllabus recommends taking it alongside the lecture.

Can I take the lab without the lecture?

Yes. A lab can be taken on its own, for example if you took the lecture at another college. Each lab's syllabus recommends taking it alongside its lecture, so ask your college whether it will pair our lab with the lecture you took.

What will I learn in Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab?

Anatomy and Physiology I (Biology 211) covers the human body from chemistry and cells to tissues, skin, bones, joints, muscles, the nervous system and the endocrine system. Anatomy and Physiology I Lab (Biology 211L) teaches anatomy and physiology lab skills through virtual labs on cells, skin, bones, joints, muscles, nerves and hormones.

How many credits are Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab?

Anatomy and Physiology I: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology among other subjects. Anatomy and Physiology I Lab: NCCRS recommends 2 semester hours, lower division, in Biology among other subjects.

Which subjects can Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab count toward?

Both are recommended in the same subjects: Biology, Life Science, or Biological Science. Your college decides which requirement each one fills.

How long are Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab?

Anatomy and Physiology I: 17 chapters and 58 instructional hours. Anatomy and Physiology I Lab: 11 labs and 55 instructional hours. Both are self-paced, so you finish as fast or as slow as you want.

How are the Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab final exams set up?

Anatomy and Physiology I: 100 multiple-choice questions, 25% of the grade. Anatomy and Physiology I Lab has no final exam: each lab ends in a lab report and a 10-question quiz.

Which textbooks do Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab use?

Both syllabi list Betts, J. Gordon, et al. Anatomy and Physiology 2e. OpenStax, 2022 (optional), with other references.

Do Anatomy and Physiology I and Anatomy and Physiology I Lab have ACE recommendations?

No: neither is on the ACE list. Anatomy and Physiology I has an NCCRS recommendation for 3 semester hours in Biology; Anatomy and Physiology I Lab has an NCCRS recommendation for 2 semester hours in Biology. Not being on the ACE list never means not recommended for credit.

What comes after Anatomy and Physiology I Lab?

Anatomy and Physiology 2. In the “Before nursing or health programs” order on the Science and labs courses page, it follows Anatomy and Physiology I Lab. Your program may set its own order.

Can I take Anatomy and Physiology I on its own?

Yes. Anatomy and Physiology I is a separate course: enroll in it alone, study it online at your own pace, and send its transcript to your college.

Is the Anatomy and Physiology I final proctored?

Yes, online: under light proctoring (no camera) if you already have 70% before it, otherwise under full proctoring. The quizzes and the assignment are open-book; the Anatomy and Physiology I final is not.
