What You'll Learn

A full semester of chemistry lab — completed at your own pace, with no deadlines or fixed class times.

Learning Outcomes

What You'll Be Able to Do

  • Describe and explain the structure and physical properties of matter, applying the concepts of mass, volume, and density through direct measurement and analysis
  • Solve quantitative problems involving the mole concept and Avogadro's number, converting between mass, moles, and number of particles using molar mass
  • Determine the empirical formula of a compound from experimental mass data, and solve stoichiometric problems, including those involving the law of definite proportions
  • Apply the principles of thermodynamics to laboratory problems involving heat transfer, energy conservation, and the measurement of heat flow through calorimetry
  • Examine and apply separation techniques such as chromatography, calculating and interpreting Rf values to perform qualitative analysis of mixtures
  • Classify acids and bases and analyze acid–base titrations, identifying the equivalence point and determining pKa values from titration-curve data
  • Perform and analyze various laboratory activities related to chemistry, including accurate measurement, data collection, and the use of laboratory tools and instrumentation
  • Apply scientific methodology, in all its explicit steps, to solve complex problems that are part of the laboratory activities, and evaluate experimental results to identify sources of error and uncertainty
  • Communicate experimental findings through formal laboratory reporting, presenting data, calculations, and conclusions clearly and accurately

FAQ

Common Questions Answered.

Everything you need to know about Chemistry Lab — credits, grading, transfer, and how it compares to traditional options.

What is Chemistry Lab?
A college-level laboratory course with six structured experiments covering density, the mole, empirical formulas, calorimetry, chromatography, and titration. It is Chemistry 111 Lab.
Do I need to buy equipment or chemicals for Chemistry Lab?
The course is designed around a zero-student-cost, home-based model using common household materials. Full details are in the syllabus.
Does this need to pair with a lecture course?
Most universities expect a lab to accompany a chemistry lecture course. Check whether your school requires them to be taken together.
How is Chemistry Lab graded?
Six graded quizzes plus assessed lab reports for each experiment. 70 or above is required to pass.
How many credits is a lab worth?
It's a 1-credit lab, matching how campus chemistry labs are credited — the Chemistry I lecture course carries the main 3 credits.
How long does Chemistry Lab take to complete?
60 contact hours across six experiments plus orientation; typically 28–30 days.
Is there a final exam?
Assessment is through the graded quizzes and lab reports rather than a single cumulative exam.
Will my university accept a home-based lab?
UPI Study's lab courses carry the same ACE/NCCRS credit recommendations as our lecture courses, and students transfer them regularly. If your program has a special in-person requirement, your registrar can confirm in minutes.
Can I take the Chemistry Lab without Chemistry I?
It's designed to pair with the Chemistry I lecture course — schools generally award lab-science credit for the combination.
How does an online chemistry lab work?
Through virtual experiments and simulations covering measurement, reactions, stoichiometry, and titration — no home chemistry kit needed.
Does this satisfy a lab-science requirement?
Yes — paired with Chemistry I, it forms the standard chemistry-with-lab combination that lab-science requirements ask for.
Who needs the Chemistry Lab course?
Students whose degree requires a lab science, and pre-health applicants whose programs expect chemistry with lab.
