Readers do not care how much you know. They care about what comes first, what comes next, and what happens if they miss one move.

Purpose shapes tone and layout. A toy assembly sheet can use short lines and diagrams, while a medicine label needs stricter warnings and exact 30-second or 2-minute timing. A manual for a power tool should put hazard notes near the step they affect, not hide them at the end like an afterthought. That is a bad habit. Users scan, they do not study every line like a professor grading a paper.

The catch: If your purpose stays vague, your manual drifts. A reader trying to reset a router, build a desk lamp, or start a centrifuge needs different levels of detail, but all three need the same thing: a path that makes sense on the first pass. Say “Press the green button” instead of “The green button should be pressed,” and say “Connect the cable to Port A” instead of “Connect it there.” That tiny shift matters because readers can point to the right object. Jargon also hurts. If a term only makes sense to engineers, explain it once in plain words or drop it.
