Anatomy and Physiology I
The body from chemistry and cells to skin, bones, joints, muscles, the nervous system and hormones.
Home › Courses › A&P for credit: every route
No AP, CLEP or DSST exam covers Anatomy and Physiology, so the routes are a college's own A&P course or a self-paced online course with a college credit recommendation. UPI Study teaches both halves online, Anatomy and Physiology I (Biology 211) and 2 (Biology 212), each with an NCCRS recommendation for 3 semester hours and its own virtual lab for 2 more. Nursing programs set their own rules for outside credit and labs, so ask yours before you enroll.

Blood and the heart, immunity, breathing, digestion, the kidneys and reproduction.
No A&P exam. AP Biology and CLEP Biology are general biology, and DSST has no biology exam at all.

From the four syllabi. Each lab works through its lecture's body systems in virtual simulations.
| Is there an A&P option? | What it means for you | |
|---|---|---|
| AP | No: AP Biology is general biology | College Board: a two-semester intro biology course for biology majors |
| CLEP | No: CLEP Biology is general biology | Body systems are one part of it; College Board recommends 6 semester hours |
| DSST | No biology or A&P exam on its list | No DSST route for A&P |
| A college's own A&P | Yes, on campus or online | That college's tuition, term dates and lab format |
| Sophia Learning | A&P I Lab: 1 semester credit, pass/fail | By Sophia's own course page |
| UPI Study A&P I and 2 | Yes: self-paced and online | NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours each |
| UPI Study A&P labs | Yes: A&P I Lab and A&P 2 Lab, done online | NCCRS recommends 2 semester hours each |
A&P I and 2 each end in a proctored final of 100 multiple-choice questions. The labs are graded on lab reports (70%) and quizzes (30%), with no final exam. A transcript is $20; UPI Study sends it to your college or nursing program.

No. CLEP's science exams are Biology, Chemistry and Natural Sciences, and CLEP Biology covers what is “usually taught in a one-year college general biology course”, with body systems as one topic among many. AP's sciences are Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Physics; College Board calls AP Biology “a two-semester college introductory biology course for biology majors”. DSST's list has no biology exam. If your program asks for A&P by name, a biology exam will not stand in for it unless the program says so.
Only the program can say, and programs differ. Before you enroll, ask three things: does it take NCCRS credit recommendations, does it take a virtual lab for its A&P lab requirement, and how recent must the course be. UPI Study's labs are virtual simulations done online, each written up as a lab report, and NCCRS recommends 2 semester hours for each; see lab vs non-lab science credit.
No. A&P I Lab (Biology 211L) and A&P 2 Lab (Biology 212L) are courses of their own, 2 semester hours each by NCCRS, graded on lab reports and quizzes with no final exam. Each syllabus recommends taking the lab alongside its lecture, but it can be taken alone; if you took the lecture at a college, ask whether it will pair our lab with it. More in A&P lecture vs lab.
Anatomy and Physiology I (Biology 211) covers the human body from chemistry and cells to tissues, skin, bones, joints, muscles, the nervous system and the endocrine system. Anatomy and Physiology 2 (Biology 212) covers blood, the heart and circulation, immunity, breathing, digestion, metabolism, the kidneys, fluid balance and reproduction.
Anatomy and Physiology I: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology among other subjects. Anatomy and Physiology 2: NCCRS recommends 3 semester hours, lower division, in Biology among other subjects.
Both are recommended in the same subjects: Biology, Life Science, or Biological Science. Your college decides which requirement each one fills.
Anatomy and Physiology I is longer by its syllabus. Anatomy and Physiology I: 17 chapters and 58 instructional hours. Anatomy and Physiology 2: 10 chapters and 42 instructional hours. Both are self-paced, so you finish as fast or as slow as you want.
Neither syllabus lists a prerequisite, so you can start with any of them.
Both have the same kind of final: 100 multiple-choice questions, 25% of the grade.
Both syllabi list Betts, J. Gordon, et al. Anatomy and Physiology 2e. OpenStax, 2022 (optional), with other references.
No: neither is on the ACE list. Anatomy and Physiology I has an NCCRS recommendation for 3 semester hours in Biology; Anatomy and Physiology 2 has an NCCRS recommendation for 3 semester hours in Biology. Not being on the ACE list never means not recommended for credit.
Anatomy and Physiology 2 Lab. In the “Before nursing or health programs” order on the Science and labs courses page, it follows Anatomy and Physiology 2. Your program may set its own order.
UPI Study sends it for you. Once Anatomy and Physiology I shows 100% complete, pay the $20 transcript on your Student Dashboard (www.upistudy.com/enrollments, "Get your transcript"); the dashboard then takes you straight to the transcript request, where you enter your college's address, and UPI Study emails it to them. Check spam for the confirmation email.
No. Open-book is fine for the Anatomy and Physiology I quizzes and assignment, but the final is proctored: lightly, with no camera, once you are at 70% or more, and fully otherwise.
ACE and NCCRS have over 2,100 cooperating colleges that will consider accepting credits; the final decision is with the universities. For a nursing program, send it the syllabus and the NCCRS listing and ask which prerequisite each course meets. Search your school in Find My College. It helps to name the subject: NCCRS recommends Anatomy and Physiology I in Biology and Anatomy and Physiology 2 in Biology.
