About Newlane University

A real degree.
A radical price.

The university at a glance

Built differently, from the ground up.

Founded with a mission

Co-founded by Ben Blair and Josh Stanley to remove cost as a barrier to a real degree. Based in Lehi, Utah and registered under the Utah Postsecondary Proprietary School Act.

DEAC accredited

Accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission since July 2023 β€” recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA. Verifiable in the DEAC, DAPIP, and CHEA directories.

Competency-based

Progress is measured by what you can demonstrate β€” not hours in a seat. Move quickly through what you know; take your time with what you don't. No fixed semester schedule.

100% online, fully self-paced

No campus, no required login times, no in-person components. Designed for working adults, parents, military, and learners outside the U.S. Coursework is accessible 24/7.

Transfer up to 75%

Up to 90 of 120 bachelor's credits may come from outside sources β€” prior college coursework, CLEP, DSST, AP (3+), and ACE/NCCRS-evaluated learning. Grade of 'C' or higher required.

Open to international students

No visa needed β€” fully online means students enroll from anywhere. Course work and exams are in English. Common destinations include the UK, Canada, Nigeria, India, and the Philippines.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about Newlane.

Does Newlane officially accept UPI Study credits?
Yes. Newlane University and UPI Study have a formal Articulation Agreement under which Newlane recognizes UPI Study courses for credit in its undergraduate degrees. ACE and NCCRS credit recommendations are accepted as the evaluation basis. The equivalency for every UPI Study course is shown in the cards on this page.
How does Newlane's $1,500 total tuition actually work?
Newlane charges $1,500 per degree, not per year or per credit. You make a $249 initial payment (which includes a $200 registration fee plus your first $49 month), then pay $39 per month until you have paid $1,500 total. After that, you pay nothing more β€” even if you take additional time to graduate. There are no textbook fees, technology fees, graduation fees, or per-course fees.
Is Newlane University really accredited?
Yes. Newlane received accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) in July 2023. DEAC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). You can verify this directly through the DEAC accredited institutions directory, the U.S. Department of Education's DAPIP database, or the CHEA database.
What degree programs does Newlane offer?
Newlane currently offers two degrees: an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts (60 credits) and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (120 credits). To enroll in the Bachelor's, you must first complete the Associate degree or transfer an equivalent number of credits. UPI Study courses can fill most of that requirement before you ever enroll at Newlane.
How many credits can I transfer into Newlane?
Newlane accepts up to 75% of degree credit requirements as transfer credit β€” which is up to 90 credits for the Bachelor's degree. Credits may come from UPI Study (ACE/NCCRS), prior college coursework at accredited institutions, CLEP, DSST, AP (score of 3+), and ACE-evaluated military training. Newlane accepts grades of 'C' or higher for transfer credit.
Do I need to enroll at Newlane before taking UPI Study courses?
No. You can earn UPI Study credits with no Newlane enrollment, no application, and no admission process. Take courses at your own pace, earn ACE/NCCRS-recommended credit, then submit your transcript to Newlane when you're ready to enroll. Many learners stack 30–60+ credits with UPI Study first, then move to Newlane for the remainder.
How does the transcript reach Newlane?
UPI Study sends an official transcript in PDF format directly to the email address designated by Newlane upon course completion. From there, Newlane's registrar applies the agreed equivalencies. No third-party services are involved.
Are Newlane graduates accepted to master's programs?
Yes. Documented Newlane graduates have been admitted to master's and doctoral programs at Louisiana State University, San Francisco State University, University of Exeter, University of Nottingham, London School of Theology, and UMass Global, among others.
What is competency-based learning at Newlane?
Competency-based education measures mastery of subject matter β€” not time spent. At Newlane, you advance by demonstrating you know the material, not by completing a fixed number of weeks per course. Fast learners can move significantly faster than a traditional semester schedule; working adults can move at whatever pace fits their life.
Does Newlane participate in federal financial aid?
No. Newlane does not participate in federal Title IV financial aid programs β€” meaning no Pell Grants and no federal student loans. At $39/month, most learners don't need loans. Employer tuition reimbursement plans (often up to $5,250/year tax-free under IRS rules) do typically cover Newlane's tuition because it is DEAC-accredited.
How does Newlane compare to WGU or University of the People?
WGU charges approximately $3,600 per 6-month term and uses competency-based learning. University of the People markets as tuition-free but charges $120 per-course assessment fees totalling ~$2,460 for a bachelor's. Newlane is $1,500 all-in for a degree, professor-led, and DEAC-accredited.
Can international students enroll at Newlane?
Yes. Newlane is fully online and accepts students from anywhere in the world. No student visa is required since there is no campus. All coursework and exams are in English. UPI Study courses also transfer internationally β€” UPI Study learners around the world have used these credits to reduce their Newlane coursework load.
What if a UPI course I want isn't on the list?
This page reflects the current Articulation Agreement. If you have a UPI Study course that isn't shown here, contact UPI Study advisors β€” equivalencies are reviewed and updated regularly, and a course may be evaluable on a case-by-case basis.
Can I combine UPI Study credits with CLEP, DSST, or military training?
Yes. Newlane accepts transfer credits from CLEP exams, DSST, AP credit (score 3+), ACE-evaluated military training, and prior college coursework β€” all in addition to UPI Study credits. Sources stack toward Newlane's 75% transfer maximum.
What if I'm not ready to commit to Newlane yet?
You don't need to commit to anything. Take UPI Study courses, earn credits, and decide later. ACE & NCCRS credits are evaluated by colleges and universities across the U.S. β€” Newlane is one possible destination, not the only one.
