Built differently, from the ground up.

World's first tuition-free university

Founded in 2009 by Shai Reshef with a singular mission: to make higher education accessible to anyone, anywhere. UoPeople was the world's first non-profit, tuition-free, American-accredited online university — and remains the model others follow.

WSCUC accredited

Accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission — the same regional accreditor that covers Stanford, UC Berkeley, Caltech, and USC. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA.

150,000+ students worldwide

UoPeople enrolls more than 150,000 students from 200+ countries and territories — including working adults, refugees, single parents, and people in conflict zones who would otherwise be locked out of higher education.

100% online & flexible

Every UoPeople program is fully online, asynchronous, and flexible. Coursework runs in 9-week terms with no required login times. Designed for students balancing work, family, military service, or migration.

Active UPI Study partnership

UoPeople and UPI Study have a formal academic partnership. UoPeople evaluates UPI Study credits through ACE/NCCRS recommendations — the same standards used for CLEP, DSST, and military training evaluations. 67 UPI Study courses transfer with named UoPeople equivalencies.

Global reach, real impact

UoPeople partners with NYU, Microsoft, Google, and McGraw-Hill to support its mission. Graduates work at Fortune 500 companies, pursue advanced degrees at top universities, and lead change in their home communities.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about UoPeople.

Does University of the People officially accept UPI Study credits?
Yes — University of the People and UPI Study have an active academic partnership. UoPeople evaluates UPI Study credits through their ACE & NCCRS recommendations, the same standards used for CLEP and military training evaluations. All 67 UPI Study courses on this page have named UoPeople equivalencies — click any course to see the specific UoPeople course code and credits awarded.
Can I earn UoPeople credits without enrolling at UoPeople first?
Yes. UPI Study lets you take courses and earn ACE/NCCRS-recommended credit completely independently — no UoPeople enrollment, application, or admission required. Complete the courses first, then submit your official UPI Study transcript to UoPeople for evaluation when you're ready to apply.
How many UPI Study credits can I transfer toward my UoPeople degree?
UoPeople accepts up to 90 credits (75% of a 120-credit Bachelor's) from outside sources including UPI Study. For an Associate, the cap is 45 credits. With 67 UPI Study courses mapped to specific UoPeople equivalents, you can comfortably fill the entire transfer cap before enrolling.
How is UoPeople tuition-free? What does it actually cost?
UoPeople is non-profit and tuition-free — there's no per-credit tuition. They charge per-course assessment fees instead ($120 per undergraduate course, $300 per graduate course), plus a one-time $60 application fee. For a 120-credit bachelor's, that's roughly $4,800 in total assessment fees if you take all courses at UoPeople. Transferring 90 credits via UPI Study drops that to ~$1,200.
How long does it take to complete a UPI Study course?
Most students complete a single course in 2–6 weeks of part-time study. UPI Study is fully self-paced with no deadlines — you can move faster through subjects you know well, or slower through more challenging ones. This is a big advantage over UoPeople's 9-week fixed terms.
Does UoPeople accept international transfer credits?
Yes — UoPeople is uniquely international, serving 150,000+ students from 200+ countries. They accept transfer credits from accredited U.S. and international institutions, plus ACE/NCCRS-evaluated sources like UPI Study. All transcripts are evaluated free of charge through the UoPeople admissions portal.
Can military students or first responders use UPI Study + UoPeople?
Yes — both are heavily used by military students, veterans, and first responders. UPI Study credits use the same ACE/NCCRS standards as military training evaluations, so they stack naturally with prior service credit. UoPeople has dedicated military-friendly support and accepts military training credits as part of their transfer policy.
What's the difference between this page and the pages I've seen for Newlane, TESU, or UAG?
Each partner has their own page because every university has its own course codes, transfer policies, and pricing model. Newlane is $39/mo for the whole degree. TESU is $499 per credit. UAG is $305 per credit. UoPeople is tuition-free with assessment fees. The UPI Study courses are the same across all partners — only the equivalency mapping and savings calculation change.
