EKU opened in 1906 in Richmond, about 25 miles south of Lexington. It now serves roughly 14,000 students, with a large share studying online or commuting from central Kentucky. The university started as a normal school, so teacher preparation still matters here. You’ll also see a strong mix of adult learners, first-generation students, and transfer students on the roster.
EKU’s College of Justice, Safety, and Military Science is one of its best-known areas, especially for fire, police, corrections, and homeland security students. The College of Education and Applied Human Sciences is another major strength, along with business, nursing, and health science programs. EKU also runs one of the country’s better-known online criminal justice offerings, and it has long worked with public-safety and military communities.
EKU’s registrar reviews transfer credit from regionally accredited colleges, military training, CLEP, and ACE/NCCRS-recommended coursework. Nontraditional credits usually land as general education, elective, or subject-specific credit if the content matches an EKU requirement. Like many universities, major-specific programs can be stricter than the general transfer office, especially in nursing and other licensure-driven fields.
Browse all UPI Study courses or talk to an advisor to plan which courses fit your Eastern Kentucky University Online degree plan.
EKU uses a straightforward transfer process, and students with at least a 2.0 college GPA are often admissible for regular transfer consideration. Some programs, especially nursing and other selective majors, have higher standards or separate admission steps. Fall and spring entry are both common, and transfer students should apply early enough for the registrar to finish credit evaluation before registration opens. If you’ve already finished UPI Study courses, sending that transcript early can save you a lot of time.
Unlimited access to all 70+ ACE & NCCRS-recommended courses. Study on your schedule — no deadlines, no campus required.

Real experiences from UPI Study students who transferred credits toward their degree.
I checked that EKU accepted ACE/NCCRS before we paid for anything. My son finished the courses over the summer, and the credits moved into his degree plan without a mess.
I work full-time, so nights and weekends were the only option. UPI Study let me keep moving, and my university accepted the credits I needed to stay on track.
I was studying from India and needed U.S. credits I could finish online. My credits transferred to my U.S. university, and that saved me a semester.
I’m a paramedic, and my schedule changes all the time. The flexible format mattered, because I needed credits for promotion without dropping shifts.
These UPI Study courses have the highest transfer acceptance rates among EKU-accepted ACE & NCCRS-recommended credits — ideal for fulfilling general education requirements at Eastern Kentucky University Online.
Answers to what students actually search for before they enroll.
Yes. EKU reviews ACE- and NCCRS-recommended coursework through the registrar, along with CLEP and military training. The key is that the course has to match EKU credit standards and fit a degree requirement. For example, a UPI Study course in psychology or composition may come in as general education or elective credit if EKU finds a close equivalent.
EKU generally accepts a large amount of transfer credit, but the exact limit depends on the degree and where the credit comes from. Bachelor’s students usually need to complete a substantial portion of their major at EKU, and some programs cap how many outside credits can apply to the major. Nontraditional credits like ACE/NCCRS are often used for electives or gen-ed requirements first.
Credits from regionally accredited community colleges in Kentucky and nearby states are commonly reviewed through EKU’s transfer process. EKU has long-standing transfer pathways with Kentucky community colleges, so students from schools like Bluegrass Community and Technical College or Madisonville Community College often have a cleaner path. UPI Study credits are different because they’re evaluated as nontraditional credit, not as standard community college coursework.
Start by requesting your UPI Study transcript after you finish the course. Then send it to EKU’s registrar or admissions office for evaluation, and they’ll decide how the credit fits your degree. If the course matches a requirement, it can post as gen-ed, elective, or subject credit after review. Most students should expect the evaluation to happen before they register, but you can ask for a pre-review if you’re planning ahead.
EKU’s undergraduate tuition is about $443 per credit hour. Thirty credits at that rate comes out to about $13,290. UPI Study’s $499 yearly plan is far cheaper if you’re using it to knock out multiple credits before enrolling at EKU, especially for general education courses.
EKU is especially known for criminal justice, fire and safety, education, nursing, and business. Transfer credit helps most when it clears out gen-ed requirements before you start those major classes. That gives you room to focus on the upper-level work EKU actually cares about in those programs.
A 2.0 college GPA is the usual baseline for transfer admission at EKU. Selective majors can ask for more, especially in health-related programs. UPI Study course grades don’t usually factor into your transfer GPA the way college grades do, but the credit can still help with degree progress.
EKU admits transfer students for fall and spring, and the deadlines vary by term. Fall applicants should apply well before classes start, and spring applicants should do the same for January entry. If you’re using UPI Study credits, finish and send them early so the registrar has time to evaluate them before registration.
EKU typically admits students for fall and spring. Some online programs may also have more flexible start dates, but the main university intake periods are still tied to the academic calendar. Transfer students usually follow the same pattern.
EKU uses fall and spring deadlines rather than a pure rolling model. Transfer deadlines usually land a few weeks before the term starts, with priority dates earlier for financial aid and registration. Exact dates can shift by year and program, so students should check the current term calendar.
Yes. EKU has a long history of serving transfer students, especially from Kentucky community colleges and adult learners returning to finish degrees. A big share of students come from nontraditional paths, and the university has clear credit-evaluation procedures.
Transfer students usually don’t need SAT or ACT scores if they’ve earned enough college credit. First-time freshmen may still be reviewed with test scores, but the policy depends on the applicant’s academic record and current university rules. Transfer applicants should focus on college GPA and completed credits instead.
Yes. EKU has orientation for new students, and transfer students usually get information tailored to their situation. Online orientation options are available for many students, which makes it easier if you’re not living near Richmond.
EKU is both online and on-campus. The main campus in Richmond has residence halls, dining, and student services, while EKU Online serves students who want remote study. Many undergraduates still live on campus, but online students can complete a full degree without moving to Richmond.
EKU offers merit scholarships, need-based aid, and some awards for transfer students. Department scholarships also exist in areas like education, business, and health fields. Transfer students can qualify, but the award amount depends on GPA, credits earned, and program.
Most students finish a single course in 2–4 weeks studying a few hours per day. There are no deadlines. You can go faster if you already know the material, or spread it out over a couple of months if you're working full-time. The self-paced format means your schedule decides the timeline, not a semester calendar.
ACE (American Council on Education) and NCCRS (National College Credit Recommendation Service) are organizations that evaluate non-traditional coursework and recommend it for college credit. They're the same bodies that evaluate military training and CLEP exams. Over 2,100 US universities have policies to accept credits from ACE/NCCRS-evaluated sources. The recommendation doesn't automatically mean a specific university will take every course — each registrar evaluates independently — but it's the standard credential for this type of transfer.
Once you pass a course, you can request an official transcript through the UPI Study portal. Transcripts are processed within a few business days and sent directly to your university's registrar, or provided as a PDF for you to submit yourself. The transcript lists completed courses, credit hours, grades, and the ACE/NCCRS recommendation reference.
