We checked that UNL accepted ACE/NCCRS before we paid for anything. My son finished the courses over summer, sent the transcript in, and the credit helped him move faster once he got to Lincoln.
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has been awarding degrees since 1869, and its main campus sits right in Lincoln, Nebraska. UPI Study courses are self-paced, online, carry ACE/NCCRS recommendations, and can be submitted through the registrar after completion. That matters for transfer review, since UNL evaluates outside credit through its academic offices before it posts. ACE and NCCRS college courses are considered by 2,100+ US universities collectively.**

UNL opened in 1869, the same year Nebraska became a state. The main campus is in Lincoln, the state capital, and the university enrolls about 25,000 students across undergraduate and graduate study. It’s the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska system. You’ll see a mix of Nebraska students, out-of-state students, and graduate researchers, so the campus doesn’t feel one-note.
UNL is known for engineering, business, agriculture, journalism, and architecture. The College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources get a lot of attention, especially because Nebraska’s economy has deep ties to agriculture and applied research. The university is also classified as R1, which means very high research activity. That shows up in programs tied to the Nebraska Innovation Campus and federal research work.
Transfer credit at UNL goes through official review, usually by the Office of the University Registrar and the college that will award the degree. Community college work, military training, CLEP, and ACE/NCCRS-recommended courses can all be considered, but the final decision depends on how the course fits your degree plan. Lower-division work is more likely to come in as elective or general education credit than as a direct major requirement. For some majors, especially in business, engineering, and architecture, you should expect tighter rules on what can count.
Browse all UPI Study courses or talk to an advisor to plan which courses fit your University of Nebraska Online degree plan.
UNL accepts transfer applicants for fall and spring entry, and students usually apply through the regular undergraduate admission process. A 2.0 GPA is the basic transfer standard, though some colleges within UNL expect more for admission or for progression into the major. Business, engineering, and architecture can have extra requirements, so a student can be admitted to the university but still need to clear college-specific rules. A strong transfer application shows solid grades in college-level work and a clear plan for degree completion.

Step 1 — What type of student are you?Real experiences from UPI Study students who transferred credits toward their degree.
We checked that UNL accepted ACE/NCCRS before we paid for anything. My son finished the courses over summer, sent the transcript in, and the credit helped him move faster once he got to Lincoln.
I work full-time, so nights and weekends were the only way this was happening. UPI Study let me earn credits on my schedule, then send them to my university without blowing up my work week.
I completed U.S. college credits from Nigeria while staying home. They transferred to my university, and that saved me a lot of time once I enrolled.
I’m a firefighter, and my schedule changes fast. UPI Study fit around shifts, which made it possible to keep moving on my degree.
These UPI Study courses have the highest transfer acceptance rates among UNL-accepted ACE & NCCRS-recommended credits — ideal for fulfilling general education requirements at University of Nebraska Online.
Answers to what students actually search for before they enroll.
Yes. UNL does evaluate ACE and NCCRS-recommended credit, along with CLEP and military training, through its registrar and the receiving college. The key is that the credit has to fit the degree plan, so a course can be accepted but still land as elective credit instead of a major requirement. For example, a UPI Study course in communication or social science may help satisfy general education space even if it doesn’t replace a department-specific class.
UNL can accept a large amount of transfer work, but the exact limit depends on where the credit comes from and which college you’re entering. For a bachelor’s degree, at least 30 of the last 36 credit hours usually need to be completed through UNL, and at least 30 total resident hours are required. Some colleges set stricter rules for upper-division and major credit, so outside courses often count first as gen ed or electives.
Credits from Nebraska community colleges transfer most smoothly when there’s an articulation agreement or a direct course match. Common Nebraska transfer schools include Southeast Community College, Metropolitan Community College, Central Community College, and Northeast Community College. UPI Study credits are evaluated differently because they’re ACE/NCCRS-based, but the registrar still looks at them for possible elective or gen-ed credit in the same overall transfer review.
First, request an official UPI Study transcript after you finish the course. Then send it to UNL’s Office of the University Registrar, which routes it into the transfer evaluation process and, when needed, the academic college. Most students see a posting after the review is complete, and it’s smart to ask for a pre-evaluation if you want to know how the credit will apply before you enroll in more classes.
UNL undergraduate tuition is about $307 per credit hour, so 30 credits would cost roughly $9,210 before fees. UPI Study’s $499/year plan is far cheaper if you’re using it to earn ACE/NCCRS-recommended credits before transferring. If those 30 credits apply to gen ed or electives, that’s a real reduction in what you’d pay at UNL for the same amount of degree progress.
UNL is especially well known for engineering, business, agriculture, journalism, and architecture. Transfer credit works best when it clears general education requirements early, because that frees your schedule for upper-division work in the College of Engineering, the College of Business, or the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. UPI Study courses can be a practical way to cover prereqs or gen eds before you move into the harder major classes.
The standard transfer admission floor at UNL is a 2.0 college GPA. That said, some colleges and majors want stronger records, especially if you’re coming into business, engineering, or architecture. UPI Study course grades don’t count in the same way as a traditional college GPA unless the receiving institution treats them as credit-bearing coursework, so they’re usually more about credit hours than GPA repair.
UNL admits transfer students for fall and spring, and the application deadlines usually track the term you want to start. Fall applicants should apply well before classes begin in August, and spring applicants should get materials in before the January start date. Finishing UPI Study courses early gives the registrar time to review the transcript before registration opens.
UNL has two main intake periods for undergraduate students: fall and spring. Transfer students can apply for either one, and that’s the typical route for students bringing in outside credit.
UNL uses term-based deadlines rather than rolling admission for most undergraduates. Fall transfer applicants should plan around early summer deadlines, while spring transfer applicants usually need to apply in the fall. Exact dates move a bit each year, so it’s worth checking the admissions calendar before you finish your UPI Study courses.
Yes. UNL takes transfer students seriously and has long worked with Nebraska community colleges and other institutions. A noticeable share of undergraduates come in with transfer credit, and the university has clear registrar processes for evaluating outside coursework.
For transfer applicants, SAT and ACT scores usually aren’t the main issue. UNL focuses more on your college transcript and completed coursework, while first-year applicants may still be asked for test scores depending on current policy. Transfer students are generally reviewed on college performance, not high school testing.
Yes, UNL has orientation for new students, and transfer students have their own path through it. It’s usually online and tied to registration, advising, and campus services. If you’re coming in with transfer credit, orientation is where you’ll want to confirm how that credit fits your degree plan.
UNL is both a residential campus and a major online provider through its distance and online programs. The main campus in Lincoln has residence halls and apartment-style housing for students who live there. Online students don’t use dorms unless they also enroll on campus.
UNL offers merit-based, need-based, and college-specific scholarships, and transfer students can qualify for some of them. The Nebraska-specific scholarships are worth checking closely if you’re an in-state student or coming from a Nebraska community college. Some departments also have their own awards for upper-division students.
Most students finish a single course in 2–4 weeks studying a few hours per day. There are no deadlines. You can go faster if you already know the material, or spread it out over a couple of months if you're working full-time. The self-paced format means your schedule decides the timeline, not a semester calendar.
ACE (American Council on Education) and NCCRS (National College Credit Recommendation Service) are organizations that evaluate non-traditional coursework and recommend it for college credit. They're the same bodies that evaluate military training and CLEP exams. Over 2,100 US universities have policies to accept credits from ACE/NCCRS-evaluated sources. The recommendation doesn't automatically mean a specific university will take every course — each registrar evaluates independently — but it's the standard credential for this type of transfer.
Once you pass a course, you can request an official transcript through the UPI Study portal. Transcripts are processed within a few business days and sent directly to your university's registrar, or provided as a PDF for you to submit yourself. The transcript lists completed courses, credit hours, grades, and the ACE/NCCRS recommendation reference.
