The University of Nevada, Reno opened in 1874, which makes it the state’s original land-grant university. It’s in Reno, about 20 miles from Lake Tahoe, with a main campus that covers roughly 1,200 acres in the city. Fall enrollment is around 21,000 students, including undergraduates, graduate students, and professional students. The student body is mixed, and you’ll see a lot of Nevada residents alongside transfer students and military-connected students.
UNR is known for research, especially through the College of Engineering, the College of Business, the College of Science, and the School of Medicine. It’s an R1 research university, so faculty work shows up in areas like wildfire science, mining, neuroscience, and water resources. The university also has strong programs in journalism and public health. Students often choose UNR because it’s a large public research school without the feel of a giant coastal campus.
UNR’s registrar reviews transfer credit from regionally accredited colleges, military training, CLEP, and other approved non-traditional sources. ACE and NCCRS courses are typically evaluated course by course, then posted as direct equivalents, general electives, or lower-division electives when there isn’t an exact match. Community college transfer is especially common through Nevada’s NSHE system, including the College of Southern Nevada, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Western Nevada College. For UPI Study credits, the key is matching the course content and sending the transcript after completion so the review can start.
Browse all UPI Study courses or talk to an advisor to plan which courses fit your University of Nevada Online degree plan.
UNR’s transfer admission is usually based on your college GPA and the number of transferable credits you’ve earned. For students with 24 or more transferable credits, the standard minimum is a 2.5 GPA; with fewer credits, the university looks more closely at high school records too. College-specific programs can be stricter, especially engineering, business, and nursing. Fall and spring admissions are both open, and a stronger application usually means meeting the minimum GPA with solid math and English preparation.

Real experiences from UPI Study students who transferred credits toward their degree.
I checked UNR’s transfer credit rules before I paid for anything. My son finished his UPI Study courses over the summer, and the credits transferred in after we sent the transcript. That saved us a lot of money and a lot of guessing.
I worked full-time and studied at night after my shift. UPI Study fit my schedule, and it helped me finish credits for my university without taking time off work.
I earned credits online from Brazil while staying at home. They transferred to my U.S. university, and that made my degree plan much easier to manage.
I’m a firefighter, so my schedule changes all the time. UPI Study let me work on credits between shifts, and that was the only way I could keep moving toward my degree.
These UPI Study courses have the highest transfer acceptance rates among UNR-accepted ACE & NCCRS-recommended credits — ideal for fulfilling general education requirements at University of Nevada Online.
Answers to what students actually search for before they enroll.
Yes, UNR evaluates ACE and NCCRS recommendations for transfer credit. The registrar reviews the course content, learning hours, and supporting documentation, then decides whether it fits as an equivalent course, elective credit, or general education credit. CLEP and military training are reviewed too, so the process is similar for several non-traditional sources. For example, a UPI Study psychology course might come in as a lower-division elective if there isn’t an exact UNR match.
UNR generally accepts up to 60 credits from a two-year school and up to 90 credits from a four-year school toward a bachelor’s degree. The exact posting can vary by college and major, because some programs limit how many outside credits can count in the major. In practice, many transfer credits land in general education or elective slots first. That’s especially common when the course doesn’t match a UNR catalog course one-for-one.
Credits from Nevada System of Higher Education schools transfer most smoothly, especially the College of Southern Nevada, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Western Nevada College. UNR has long-standing transfer pathways inside the state system, so lower-division work is often easier to place. UPI Study credits are treated differently because they aren’t on a community college transcript, but they’re still reviewed through the same registrar process. The main question is whether the course content lines up with UNR’s requirement.
First, finish the UPI Study course and request an official transcript. Then send it to UNR’s registrar for evaluation, usually after you’ve been admitted or while your application is being processed. The registrar reviews the course and posts the credit if it’s approved; some departments may also weigh in if the credit is meant for a major requirement. A pre-evaluation can sometimes help, but the final decision still happens after the official transcript is received.
UNR charges about $342 per undergraduate credit, so 30 credits would cost about $10,260 in tuition alone. UPI Study’s $499 yearly plan is far cheaper than paying UNR for those same 30 credits. Even if only part of your UPI Study work transfers, the savings can still be large. The biggest value is usually in knocking out general education credits before you enroll at UNR.
UNR is especially known for engineering, business, science, journalism, public health, and medicine. Those colleges can be selective, and they often want students to arrive with basic writing, math, and science requirements already done. UPI Study credits can help clear general education requirements, which leaves more room for major classes and required electives. That matters most if you’re aiming for a structured program with fewer free electives.
For most transfer applicants with 24 or more transferable credits, UNR expects at least a 2.5 GPA. Some majors, especially in the College of Engineering, the College of Business, and nursing-related pathways, may want a stronger record. UPI Study course grades usually don’t factor into your UNR transfer GPA the way college grades do, but they can still affect whether credit is posted. The registrar’s main job is to decide credit equivalency, not to recalculate your college GPA from ACE/NCCRS work.
UNR admits transfer students for fall and spring, and the deadlines are usually tied to those terms rather than a single annual cutoff. Fall applicants should apply early enough to allow time for transcript review, especially if they’re sending ACE or NCCRS credits. Spring deadlines are usually later in the year, but timing can shift by program. If you’re taking UPI Study courses, finish them well before the deadline so the registrar has time to evaluate the transcript.
UNR usually has two main intake periods: fall and spring. Transfer students can enter in either term, and some graduate programs use different schedules. The university doesn’t run on a single rolling entry model for every program.
UNR’s deadlines are term-based, with fall and spring application dates set separately. Transfer deadlines are usually later than freshman deadlines, but they still leave time for transcript review. Some programs set their own priority dates, so it’s worth checking the college you’re applying to.
Yes. UNR takes a lot of transfer students, especially from Nevada community colleges and other schools in the state system. It has established articulation agreements, so students who start at CSN, TMCC, or WNC often move in with a clear plan.
For transfer students, SAT and ACT scores usually aren’t the main factor. UNR focuses on your college coursework and GPA once you’ve earned enough transferable credits. Freshman requirements are separate and can change, so transfer applicants shouldn’t worry about testing in the same way.
Yes, UNR offers orientation for new students, and transfer students have their own advising steps. Much of it can be done online, which helps if you’re moving in from another state. It’s worth doing early because it affects registration and advising access.
UNR is mainly an on-campus university in Reno, but it also offers online courses and some online programs. It has residence halls and apartment-style housing for students who live on campus. Most undergraduates still take a mix of in-person and online classes, depending on their major.
UNR offers merit scholarships, need-based aid, and some awards that transfer students can use. The university also has department scholarships through colleges like Business, Engineering, and Science. Transfer students should file the FAFSA early and check college-specific scholarship pages, since some awards are tied to major or class standing.
Most students finish a single course in 2–4 weeks studying a few hours per day. There are no deadlines. You can go faster if you already know the material, or spread it out over a couple of months if you're working full-time. The self-paced format means your schedule decides the timeline, not a semester calendar.
ACE (American Council on Education) and NCCRS (National College Credit Recommendation Service) are organizations that evaluate non-traditional coursework and recommend it for college credit. They're the same bodies that evaluate military training and CLEP exams. Over 2,100 US universities have policies to accept credits from ACE/NCCRS-evaluated sources. The recommendation doesn't automatically mean a specific university will take every course — each registrar evaluates independently — but it's the standard credential for this type of transfer.
Once you pass a course, you can request an official transcript through the UPI Study portal. Transcripts are processed within a few business days and sent directly to your university's registrar, or provided as a PDF for you to submit yourself. The transcript lists completed courses, credit hours, grades, and the ACE/NCCRS recommendation reference.
